| Feb. 14 Entry: The down side of being an adult is you have to constantly remind yourself to have fun. |

| Feb. 14, 2009 After meditating this morning, I picked up an old pair of jeans that had been laying on a workbench in the basement for months. In the pocket was a crumpled note that I'd written to myself. It was a quote from Philo of Alexandria: "The goal of wisdom is laughter and play ... even becoming the laughter itself."
Feb. 16 I caught a glimpse of Jamison Creek while driving over it at daybreak, a fleeting reflection of the morning light on the surface. Back when I took a river reading class, the instructor said, "You can always tell a paddler, they can't drive over a bridge without looking to see the river." There's something comforting about looking at a stream, no matter how big it is or, like Jamison Creek, how small. I get the same feeling from gazing into the woods while driving by. Drawn to it.
March 17 Ashland County's Goodwill stores have installed stench boxes that spew foul-smelling "deodorant" periodically. First, it was the Loudonville store, then Ashland. The smell can be described a cross between urinal camphor cakes and an Avon sales convention. Normally, I can put up with just about anything, but THIS CAN'T GO ON. I asked a clerk at the Loudonville store whether she's had any complaints about them. She said she hadn't. I told her, "Now you have." Please join me in the campaign to rid Goodwill of these insidious devices. Threaten to boycott the stores until they get rid of them.
March 31 I picked up a copy of Ernie Pyle's 1930s Travel Dispatches at the Loudonville Goodwill. I've never had much luck finding worthwhile books there. I hesitated to lay down $2 for it, but felt the need to immerse myself in classic journalism. We need to get back to that, short sentences, simple language, portraits of real people, places and events and a little more emphasis on why.
Pyle wrote about a retired air mail pilot from New Jersey, who flew when every flight was an adventure. He wrapped up the piece by saying the guy he was interviewing looked happier than he had ever seen him, adding, "I don't know yet whether that was because he stopped flying, or because he had started thinking about it again."
